We were commissioned to design the kitchen of the apartment we live in. We have lived here for several years, and we can trace every corner with our eyes closed, we know how it changes throughout the day, we recognize its sounds. During the design process, we retraced the established gestures of using the old kitchen and kept them unchanged. The kitchen enjoys a particularly fortunate spatial condition: on one side, it communicates with the square, while on the other, only partially separated from the living room, it appears as the natural enclosure of a large bookcase that extends along the entire length of the room. A countertop with varying depths is inserted beneath and alongside a large window overlooking the square, providing direct visual contact with it and absorbing its events: its sounds, its light projections, its shadows. During the day, the white MDF surfaces of the kitchen vibrate with the glossy white ceramic walls and take on color depending on the lighting conditions, projecting patterns onto the matte surfaces. The kitchen is plastically composed of two niches with tall wall units which, on one side, act as a counterpoint to the large bookcase.
